Lá Fhéile Bríde

HAPPY ST BRIGIDS DAY

Saint Brigid of Kildare or Brigid of Ireland is the patroness saint of Ireland, and one of its three national saints along with Patrick and Columba. According to medieval Irish hagiographies, she was an abbess who founded the important abbey of Kildare, as well as several other convents of nuns

Brigid’s cross or Brigit’s cross is a small variant of the cross often woven from straw or rushes. It appears in many different shapes, but the most popular designs feature a woven diamond or lozenge in the centre.

Irish Oscar Contenders pt 1

John here from Class of 23 and we are getting excited about an Irish sweep at the forthcoming 95th Oscar ceremony! Can you believe it’s been almost 100 years of the little golden statue? Martin McDonagh continues his meteoric rise since his Oscar winning short ‘Six Shooter’ back in 2004 reuniting Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson from his critically acclaimed feature and box office success ‘In Bruges’ in 2008.

‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is a beautifully shot, darkly humorous but haunting tale of a dissolution of a friendship set against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War. It features an all star Irish cast, four of which are nominated at this years academy awards (Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan) alongside Gleeson and Farrell. McDonagh has been nominated for Best Director and Screenplay and the film is justified in its place in the Best Picture category also.

It is still widely available to see in the cinema here in Ireland and in my opinion deserves a day out to witness on the big screen, Savoy on on O’Connell street getting my nod or the Stella Theatre in Rathmines.

The art of asking

Don’t make people pay for music, says Amanda Palmer. Let them. In a passionate talk that begins in her days as a street performer (drop a dollar in the hat for the Eight-Foot Bride!), she examines the new relationship between artist and fan.

Amanda went on to create a podcast, The Art of Asking Everything.

[Podcast description] Amanda Palmer is a rock star, best-selling author, TED speaker and community leader who does everything on her own terms simply by asking. Now, she turns the tables on her colleagues and heroes to find out how they create art, love difficult people, work for change, and survive the worst moments of their lives. From porn stars to empathy researchers, and cartoonists to climate scientists, no topic is out of bounds.

The podcast is audience supported – yes Amanda asked people to back the media she creates.
